Butter

Unsalted butter is preferred because it allows you to control the saltiness of the frosting. Like the cream cheese, your butter should also be at room temperature to ensure a smooth mixture.

Powdered Sugar

Also known as confectioners' sugar, this is essential for sweetness and the smooth texture of the frosting. Sifting the powdered sugar after measuring helps to prevent lumps and makes the frosting silky.

Vanilla Extract

A splash of vanilla extract enhances the flavor profile of the frosting.

Equipment Needed

Electric Mixer or Stand Mixer: While you can mix by hand, an electric mixer makes the job much easier and ensures a smoother frosting.

Step-by-step Guide to Cream Cheese Frosting

 Preparation

Start by bringing your cream cheese and butter to room temperature. This step is crucial for achieving a smooth, lump free frosting. I usually take them out of the fridge about an hour before I plan to start. If you're in a hurry, you can cut them into smaller pieces to speed up the process.

Mixing
  1. Beat the Cream Cheese and Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. This usually takes about 23 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed.
  2. Add the Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, about one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. This helps to incorporate the sugar smoothly without creating a cloud of sugar dust.
  3. Incorporate the Vanilla and add a pinch of salt: Once all the powdered sugar is mixed in, add the vanilla extract. Mix until everything is well combined and the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

At this point, check the consistency of your frosting. It should be thick enough to hold its shape but still spreadable. If it's too thick, you can add a teaspoon of heavy whipping cream or milk one at a time until you reach the desired consistency. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar, a little at a time.

  • 8 oz Softened Cream Cheese

  • 4 cup Powdered Sugar (Sifted)

  4. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Continue mixing until the frosting is smooth and has reached your desired consistency.
  5. If the frosting is too thick, you can add one teaspoon of milk or cream at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. If it's too thin, you can add more powdered sugar.
  6. Once all the ingredients are combined, increase the speed of your mixer to medium-high and beat the frosting for 2-3 minutes, or until it becomes light and fluffy.
